Secifically the first gen? 3.5 vs 5.7? Reliability? My main concern is the cylinder deactivation on the 5.7 if anybody has experience with that.

They they are mechanically sound. The older 5.7 isn't very quick but it also isn't terribly slow. Fuel economy and the older versions isn't great. But they're otherwise solid from what I've seen

5.7 sounds good, forums say it’s reliable and I found it more than fast enough for everyday driving on the Charger. V6 is kinda meh but the only way to get AWD.
Not the first gen, but I rented a ‘18 300S and I liked it

I drove a first gen 3.5 for about 5 years (very similar to this one above) . It had this magnesium pearl color that was only available for about 2-3 years. The front end chassis components go out pretty quickly. I replaced control arms every two years. At 100,000 miles, the timing belt NEEDS replacement. I pushed mine off due to financial reasons, and seized the engine at 107,000. The stock nav. screen blew a board, s o I replaced it with a single din head unit. Tons of room inside, and enough power to get by. Fuel economy is mediocre , but a heck of a lot better than the 5.7. I love d that car, I wish I never bl ew the engine on it.

They were in the tail end in our local listings for road worthiness test passes alongside with some other contempo rary Mopars. If I recall right steering was their achilles heel.

I know you asked about gen 1, but I have a gen 2 with the pentastar and 8 speed combo and absolutely adore it. It’s been reliable, fuel efficient, relatively fun to drive, and is put together really nicely. When all is said and done it’s honestly a boring car to own, which I enjoy. No surprises besides how trouble free it’s been. I also love the ‘60s retro styling of it. All around great car and I recommend them to anybody looking

It is the facade of quality, without any quality. In my neck of the woods, these go used for about $2500 all day. All around terrible cars, and they can’t be burned off the road quick enough. It is horrible cars like this that give motoring a bad name. All I can think of when I s ee these on the road is how embarrassed the person must be to be lumped in with wannabe gangstars that took out a 72 month lease on a used POS just to look like a baller. SAD.

Personally, find a 2nd gen with the 3.6/8-speed. They’re better built inside, quicker, more efficient, and from what I’ve found, dead reliable.
It’s what we’ll be getting when the car finally gets retired.

Second this, have a pentastar Charger, and they are good cars. The Pentastars have nearly the same HP as the earlier Hemis.

Good cars, the newer ones obviously have much nicer interiors and powertrains. 3.5L isn’t too bad, has enough power, stay away from the 2.7L. 5.7L is durable, trans is pretty bulletproof as well. Ride great, comfy, no real issues any other older car won’t have.
If you can splurge on the SRT, get it.

Would also like to point out that I haven't read the comments yet, and am basing my opinion off of one experience with a low mileage, one owner example that was dealer maintained. That said, it was one of the cheapest interiors ever, and pieces of it literally broke/fell apart in my hands.(air duct, infotainment button, and signal stock). It was a quick cars that sounded good, but body roll in corners was terrifying, and the brakes were nonexistent. No offence intended to anyone here who owns/likes these.

The Hemi V8's are very reliable, and the Lx platform is very sturdy. A lot of Lincoln Town Car fleet cars have been replaced with 300C’s. The Panther-bodies are still more reliable, but the Lx-bodies are still great ( although the interior plastics are horrible in the earlier cars) .

You must have had a lemon. The Chrysler Lx-bodies are the new Panther-bodies. Almost 50% of cop cars sold in the US are Chargers. Fleets that operate Town Cars are replacing them with 300Cs and the full size GM SUV (Yukon, Escalade, etc).
